THE
PARK OF ETNA

| At the slopes of Etna you can find over 1,400 vegetable kind, "larici" pines and at least hundred holms-oak and chestnut trees aged more than half a millennium. At low quotes, there are diffuse citrus fruit's cultivation. At a height of 1,000 meters the ground has been worked to obtain many balconies, engraved in yo the flanks of the mountain, thank to a secular human activity. Over 2,000 meters there's no trace of arboreal vegetation, but instead you find "pulvini dello spino santo), one sole species of Etna. Over 2,450 meters vegetable lifeform it's exclusively made by few pioneer plants very taugh to live in that challenging enviroment. Over that limit it's sole property of the vulcanic desert. |  |
One of the relevant animal species here is represented by the birds. It's common to meet birds like the culbianco, the redstart, the stonechat, the chimney-sweep, the pied red-woodpecker, the woodpigeon, the turtle dove, the hoope and the jay. Among the bird-prey we can find the sparrow hawk, the pilgrim-hawk, the kestrel, the barn owl and the common owl. Bird watching for Herons, ducks and others to the Gurrida Lake, the only water natural reserve in the Etna areas. |  |
Zone A (19,000 hectares), it's almost entirely public property, there are not human installations. It's an area of great uncontaminated spaces, kingdom of the bird-prey. Target of the Park of Etna it's to allow nature to live its regular way avoiding or limiting at minimum human interferences.
Zone B (26,000 hectares), plenty litte and medium farms with amazing examples of ancient farmer houses. Frugal animal's refuges, old wineries and main place, as signs of an ancient human presence that lives even now. In that area the Park of Etna's target is to enhance farmers and keep doing their traditional work, avoiding to destroy this wonderful cultural treasure underneath concrete and urbanism.
There's another Zone called "pre-park" zone (14,000 hectares), where the Park of Etna allows the realisation of turistic installations. Always with respect of nature and preservation of the enviroment.
| The Park of Etna is a choice of life and culture. The best things to know for the folks that live those places is to be taugh and live a strong and open dialog with themselves and each other, to be always in challenge and be proud to live an unique experience and to stand up for real human values able to build a more honest and joyful future. That's the Park that today people have to build for the tomorrow ones. | |
