In the province of Ragusa durino summer there are only a few religious and folkloric events because the people's interest is concentrated on beach activities on the kilometres long shore of the province. Only in Ispica in July there are two festivities in honour of Our Lady of Grace, celebrated on the first Sunday of July, and the Madonna del Carmelo, which is on the 16th. But celebrations usually take place on the following Sunday. Besides the traditional religious events, various "pagan" entertainment frame the festival. Every village along the seashore organises sports tournaments, such as "tamburello", hand-ball, foot-ball, as well as sailing and wind-surfing regattas organised by the various aquatic sports club along the coast. Evening entertainment instead are very different. On every main square of the villages, various performances take place: from dialect theatre to piano-bar music, from cabaret to musical shows. Only matter is that the various local administrations and organisation teams decide the program fro the events, only a few days before they start, thus making it difficult to have a proper information on time. In summer Comiso celebrates its patron S. Biagio. Celebrations take place on the 2nd Sunday of July and are characterised by a procession of faithful, arranged on two long lines, each one holding a big candle protected by a cup artistically decorated.
Siracusa.
On the 25th of July the town of Siracusa will be in a state of excitement for its patroness S. Venera. This festivity is very strongly felt, it occurs in a simple way through the religious rites and is also characterised by the preview days. The most important moment of the celebration is the procession of the statue and the relics of the saint, which are usually kept in the church devoted to her.
In the month of July at Noto there are several events that enliven the baroque town of the Siracusa's province. On the 16th the Madonna del Carmine is celebrated through a procession that involves a lot of people. During this religious days there are also folklorist and gastronomic events, in particular the tuna festival. Near the end of July a cultural and musical events "the night of Giufà" takes place. It is a magic medly of sounds, colours and images in the name of a "mth": Giufà, the silly and cheerful character that links together origin, feelings and culture of the different souls of Mediterranean Sea.
At castelluccio, close to Noto, S. Rita will be celebrated. Also in this case religion merges with tradition and folklore becoming a real popular festival with typical games performed, such as "tira e mmutta" (pull and push) and "ciapparedda". During the festivity there is an auction sale of the local handicraft and the festival of the home-made bread sandwiches.
Trapani.
Although celebrations of Madonna del Carmelo, at Buseto Palizzolo, have a quite recent origin, it is becoming more and more important over the years. The cult for the Virgin is very old, but people have been celebrating her constantly for the last 15 years, without folklore but with deep religious feelings. Although the statue of the Virgin is housed in the mother church devoted to her, it comes out in procession from the Madonna di fatima's church, in the district of Piano Neve. Forty bearers lead the processional array and during their way they stop and turn the statue let it facing the various districts so that the Virgin will protect them with her glance.
