HOWARD BERHENS

Behrens' paintings have a specific goal, a singular intent, no matter what the subject matter: to bring the pleasure of being alive to the foreground of our awareness. From mountain grandeur to craggy coastlines to the intimate beauty of a woman unaware she's been captured on canvas, Behrens' paintings are affirmations of life. From the flowerpot on a windowsill to the boats in the harbor, he invites us to see the gift in the moment, to see with new eyes the vivid color of the earth's palette.

The character of an artist is often visible to the discerning eye in the elements of the artist’s work. The style, subject matter, use of color and technique all offer considerable insight to those who wish to know the person behind the painting. Upon meeting Howard Behrens, the correlation between artist and artwork quickly becomes apparent.

Behrens is energetic and enthusiastic. His outlook is optimistic. He is excited about his art, and it is no wonder that he produces work with similar character. He paints tirelessly in his studio at his Maryland home, sometimes emerging for little else other than food, drink and sleep. He works quickly and boldly, eschewing approaches that he describes as over-calculated or computerized.

When away from painting, Behrens pursues his other interests with equal fervor. He enjoys thoroughbred horse-racing, model trains, and of course, his trips to the shore. The shore can be anywhere - Bethany Beach in Delaware or Santorini in the Greek Islands. On these trips to the shore, his is always snapping away with his 35 mm camera, and on this celluloid sketchpad, he is recording the images that will later be transformed, through his creative process and considerable facility, into paintings and serigraphs.
